Summary

Fan-favorite heroes Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces on a deadly maritime case in the remarkable new novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author John Sandford。
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat。 It’s a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver 。 。 。 a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean。 None of it makes sense unless there’s something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed。
They’re federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI’s turf。 When the FBI’s investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport。 And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers。

Something has happened to John Sandford。 After all of my reading of his books, I may have to give up on him。 After the very unnecessary death in the middle of the book, it was Iike someone else, or a team of someone else, wrote the rest of the book。 It was all tedious diving details and procedural junk, with very little interesting character info。 He used Virgil Flowers as an action figure and Rae as a sex object。 Lucas had no characterization in the second half of the book。 He was mainly on the Something has happened to John Sandford。 After all of my reading of his books, I may have to give up on him。 After the very unnecessary death in the middle of the book, it was Iike someone else, or a team of someone else, wrote the rest of the book。 It was all tedious diving details and procedural junk, with very little interesting character info。 He used Virgil Flowers as an action figure and Rae as a sex object。 Lucas had no characterization in the second half of the book。 He was mainly on the phone or watching events。 。。。more

#31 Lucas Davenport / #13 Virgil Flowers series。 This 2021 series entry by author John Sandford is an absorbing read and a change of pace。 Since Lucas Davenport became a U。S。 Marshal he has specialized in two things: stirring things up when a case seems to be at a standstill and with his hard-boiled sidekicks taking down the crooks who are determined not to be taken down。 This time around, a Senator from Florida requests Davenport's services when the FBI task force investigating the murder of 3 #31 Lucas Davenport / #13 Virgil Flowers series。 This 2021 series entry by author John Sandford is an absorbing read and a change of pace。 Since Lucas Davenport became a U。S。 Marshal he has specialized in two things: stirring things up when a case seems to be at a standstill and with his hard-boiled sidekicks taking down the crooks who are determined not to be taken down。 This time around, a Senator from Florida requests Davenport's services when the FBI task force investigating the murder of 3 Coast Guardsmen hits a brick, or since it's Florida, a concrete block wall。 After Lucas has stirred the pot and has a direction to investigate, he calls for a change of pace。 Needing someone to pose as a diver, he has laid back Virgil Flowers team up with U。S。 Marshal Rae as an ex-con doper (and expert diver) and his ghetto girlfriend。 And so the twin prongs of the investigation proceed and in the course of the case make for a novel that is unputdownable。 An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat。 It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver 。 。 。 a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean。 None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed。 They're federal officers killed on the job, which means the case is the FBI's turf。 When the FBI's investigation stalls out, they call in Lucas Davenport。 And when his case turns lethal, Davenport will need to bring in every asset he can claim, including a detective with a fundamentally criminal mind: Virgil Flowers。 。。。more

John Sandford is back! I haven't been real happy with Mr。 Sandford's 2-3 last books, but this one was excellent。Lucas and Virgil back together。 Bob and Rae。 The Florida setting was a nice change and reminded me of an old Travis McGee novel。Sandford is back in the saddle again。 John Sandford is back! Couldn’t finish it fast enough and now have the long wait until the next one。 Loved Virgil being a main character and much enjoyed the new setting in my home state of Florida。

I think this is one of the strongest entries in John Sandford's series, primarily because both Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers star equally, instead of one playing a bit part in the other's book。 Lucas starts investigating a case in Florida with Bob (of Bob and Rae), but has to call in Virgil to do the scuba diving for the baddies to be captured in the act。 Who knew Virgil (or Sandford) would pull a Jack Reacher-like expertise in scuba diving out of the brine? I loved seeing Virgil & Lucas team up。 It was not hard to imagine Virgil rocking his stoner diver undercover persona。

I do like it when Lucas and Virgil share space in the same novel。 I was emotionally trashed when a long-time character was killed。 And what happened to the charm of calling Virgil "that fuckin' Flowers?" It would have been 5 stars except that Virgil's character was out-of-character without that charmin' nickname。 Have we become so politically correct that the 31st novel of a best-selling author has to change one of its basic characters most charming characteristic and lose his flavor? Great Tale!Lucas and Virgil--what a great combo--and add in Rae for a woman's touch。 Fun book and characters taking down bad guys。 Makes me appreciate the men and women who do this daily and I hope they stay safe because it is a dangerous world, book or real version。 Great Tale!Lucas and Virgil--what a great combo--and add in Rae for a woman's touch。 Fun book and characters taking down bad guys。 Makes me appreciate the men and women who do this daily and I hope they stay safe because it is a dangerous world, book or real version。 。。。more

A Winning CombinationJohn Sanford has done it again。 Love when Virgil and Lucas chase down the bad guys together。 Also glad Rae joined them again。

I found the switch between Davenport's and Flower's point of view awkward and unbalanced at first, but this book definitely ramped up to the end。 It turned out fast paced, exciting, and these two strong characters fit well together, neither overpowering the other in a "well who is the main character" sort of question。 But if you really want to give someone top billing, I'd say Flowers without hesitation。 What I loved best: Virgil Flowers is back in full force, sounding like himself again, and no I found the switch between Davenport's and Flower's point of view awkward and unbalanced at first, but this book definitely ramped up to the end。 It turned out fast paced, exciting, and these two strong characters fit well together, neither overpowering the other in a "well who is the main character" sort of question。 But if you really want to give someone top billing, I'd say Flowers without hesitation。 What I loved best: Virgil Flowers is back in full force, sounding like himself again, and not what read as a caricature of him, that seemed to come from someone not actually all that familiar with him that I've seen in recent books。 And the pairing of Virgil and Rae? Wow! I'd love to see more of this pairing (while continuing to give Frankie nothing to worry about)。 。。。more

John Sanford for the win again! Except for one part that I won’t spoil if you haven’t read it, I loved it! With both Davenport & Flowers in the book together, how could it be bad?! I live for these series and can’t wait for the next one!

Great readVery tense, believable situations, fast paced。 Some interesting information on diving。 Hated to see it end。 Looking forward to the next book in the prey series

Always fun to read a Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers book, but both in one novel is over the top!

Not the best in the series, but a solid entry。 Virgil Flowers comes in late in the book, but he does show up。 Long set up for the crime。 Twisty plot, as always。

This was another good book by John Sandford。 There are a lot of characters and that can get a little confusing, but, excellent read。 As usual, Lucas Davenport kicks ass!!

I discovered both series as audiobooks during the pandemic, and Virgil Flowers became my guy。 Man, I adore "that f***ing Flowers。" What's not to love about a preacher's son who looks like a surfer dude, talks to God before going to sleep, and always 'forgets' to carry his gun? This book however, felt more of Lucas' story, but that could have been because I didn't quite gel with the way the narrator read Virgil。 (To me, Eric Conger is the voice of Virgil。) As with both series, the dialogue and in I discovered both series as audiobooks during the pandemic, and Virgil Flowers became my guy。 Man, I adore "that f***ing Flowers。" What's not to love about a preacher's son who looks like a surfer dude, talks to God before going to sleep, and always 'forgets' to carry his gun? Well, I read this too fast。 It's an exciting story as are all Sandford books。 This one has both Davenport and Flowers。 But Virgil doesn't get to be Virgil very much and we're the poorer for it。 Nevertheless, the story keeps moving at such a pace it's hard to put the book down。 Well, I read this too fast。 It's an exciting story as are all Sandford books。 This one has both Davenport and Flowers。 But Virgil doesn't get to be Virgil very much and we're the poorer for it。 Nevertheless, the story keeps moving at such a pace it's hard to put the book down。 。。。more

Rated as 4。5 stars, didn't make my favorites shelf。 Great story and I enjoyed having Davenport and Flowers together again。 How did Virgil get away from his normal work assignment in Minnesota to join Lucas on a federal investigation? This is a Super Prey book。 Not only is the scope pretty big, it also features Davenport and Flowers working together。 Granted, a lot of other Sandford books team them up but not as extensively as this one。 They're both the main characters, which has up until now been unusual。 Once again, Sandford hits it out of the park。 It lacks the usual moment when Davenport figures something out, and the action heightens until the end, but in this case I didn't mind。 Everything worked out pretty well as far This is a Super Prey book。 Not only is the scope pretty big, it also features Davenport and Flowers working together。 Granted, a lot of other Sandford books team them up but not as extensively as this one。 They're both the main characters, which has up until now been unusual。 Once again, Sandford hits it out of the park。 It lacks the usual moment when Davenport figures something out, and the action heightens until the end, but in this case I didn't mind。 Everything worked out pretty well as far as I'm concerned。 There is even a short nonfiction piece at the end by the author。 I'm trying to think of another time he's done this, and I'm coming up blank。 I know only a few basics about Sandford himself, and it was good to get a peek into his mind when he's just being himself。 I've met him several times, and this afterword taught me a lot more about him。 All in all, you can't go wrong with a Sandford book。 Highly recommended。Also, this book reminds you of how a Sandford character can die unexpectedly and with very little lead up to it。 Never forget that no matter how down to earth he seems, there is a part of him that is absolutely ruthless。 。。。more
